(More customer reviews)The Burma shaving brush is often handed from old shaving pros to beginners as a starter brush. What that new shaver doesn't know, is that the pros only give out Burmas because they're dirt cheap.

Pros:
-The stiffness can be nice. The boar bristle used in the Burma is almost prickly, and you can really feel it digging into your pores to help clean your face. I'd almost consider using the brush for the exfoliation alone.
-CHEAP price, and the build quality is still fairly solid so it doesn't feel cheap.

Cons:
-It stinks, above and beyond the wet fur smell of any animal-hair brush.
-It's a little too stiff, and can be really unpleasant on your face.
-It doesn't hold water or lather very well.

...but it does get better, because the brush just needs a fairly involved break-in period before it truly blossoms. You'll need to expend some effort shampooing it out of the box, and then going through some lousy shaves. When you do finally break it in, it turns into an entirely usable brush.

Overall, I'd just spend the extra money and get a Tweezerman. A Tweezerman doesn't cost that much more, is made of much softer baddger hair, and the only negative out of the box is the same wet hair smell (though not nearly as bad as the Burma). A Tweezerman also doesn't need nearly the prep work that the Burma does. A Burma is a fine brush for gift baskets and and for the shaving aficianado looking to mix things up on the cheap, but there are much better brushes that don't cost that much more.

Despite the fact that no matter what it is we are talking about that's made by them, it is destined to be horrendously overpriced. I do believe that much of that fact is due not to Burt's Bees presumed superior quality, but more to its company's excellently thought out distribution system. Here in New England, the only places that you see a Burt's Bees display is in those wonderfully quaint, but usually way too-rich-for-my-blood country type stores we all know and love. The type of places that sell boxed soup mixes and granulated spices for about 7 times the price you could find its equivalent in any supermarket. One thing I will say for Burt's Bees products, they do smell nice, and they don't appear to spare anything on the oils they use to achieve its scent. Unfortunately when you are talking about a brand that sells even their lip balm for $4.00, in my opinion they are asking me to pay just a little too much for their perceived consummate quality. Burt's Bees shaving soap is just another example of their expert marketing strategy, as well as unfortunately also one of their best examples of giving the everyday man who just wants a good quality shaving soap the corporate shaft. I bought a cake of the Burt's Bees soap at a local store here because I still use a mug and brush to shave, and enjoy trying new shaving soaps. It smelled nice and lathered quite well.However take it from someone that has used dozens of different soaps over the years, the Burt's Bees was not in any way superior in either scent or lather.In fact the whole shaving experience with it was just barely average in my opinion.For what you get, and what they're asking for it, it should not even be a consideration for purchasing.As far as I am concerned, its price is nothing less than a modern day version of highway robbery. If you are still a man that shaves with a mug and brush, you would be far better served by shopping on Ebay for your mug soap.Type in "shaving soap" on Ebay and you will find hundreds of auctions available where just about any scent imaginable can be found by dozens and dozens of people that make excellent soaps in their own homes.For what you pay here for one cake of Burt's Bees, you could easily get 3 bars of just about anything you desire on Ebay.

In conclusion, if you are a die hard Burt's Bees loyalist, buying your shaving soap on Amazon is just as good and cheap a place as any. However if you're someone that enjoys a refreshing, rich lathering shaving soap in just about any scent you favor for a fraction of the price of the Burt's Bees,I recommend you skip this horrendously overpriced brand and try my Ebay recommendation.Whether you desire or admire a bay rum scent or any other, your money will much better served away from this stuff..

Badger is certainly better than boars plus there are those beautiful handles and other considerations that make a shaving session feel like a luxury...however, like any type of grooming product they tend to get a lot of use and may have hygenic concerns. These inexpensive alternatives are of a decent quality, durable enough to last years but inexpensive enough to take along when traveling or just toss away should you feel the need for new/cleaner brushes. Also an excellent option for those new to the shaving experience and unsure if they want to invest top dollar into more expensive options. Gets the job done right without the high price.

Limelight Bay Shaving Soap - 3 Bars Review

(More customer reviews)This soap is simply wonderful in my opinion. It lathers fairly well, to my understanding at least (I'm still new to shaving with these.) The scent is definitely the best thing about it. It can almost freshen your bathroom just by sitting on the counter. The only problem that I can find is that it will dry out on my face, causing me to shave in portions rather than preparing everything at once. I'm not certain, however, about if that's the soap or something I'm doing that's causing that, such as not having enough water with the brush. All in all, great soap, I'll probably continue using this until someone points me towards something better, which I find unlikely.

Kingsley Shave Bowl Dark Wood + Col. Conk Bay Rum Soap Review

You might think that because the shaving bowl & soap are sold together that the soap would actually fit (properly) inside the bowl, right?
Oh...I'm the only one?
The soap (which is great!) is too small in diameter so there's a 1/2" gap all the way around AND too thick, so the lid rests/sticks to the bar! Bummer.
Col. Conk does make a bigger 3" bar that would fit better...

Once I became unhappy with the purchase (thus requiring my attention/focus), I became more critical...
The bowl is just barely too big (1/4") to fit behind the mirror, which would be a nice option.
I'm considering "massaging" it with my belt-sander (& a touch of stain) to make it fit (pretty).
FYI-I also noticed, since I'm trying to return the item(s), that the shipping was more ($$) than the item.
That's why the bowl may get a "modification"...and a bigger bar of soap.

If I may suggest a great & useful alternative...

A plastic (Box Shell) bar soap travel case.
The kind we (our parents) used when traveling.
They're cheap, easy to find (locally), and come in a wide variety of colors/styles.
Epoxy a big brass upholstery tack to the inside of the Bottom-half, so that any size bar stays put.
It fits behind the mirror or can sit (covered/closed) on the counter.
It can be used in the shower, with no worries.
The Top-half can be used for a "mug", if desired/needed.

It can also travel securely with you...might be able to fit razor (disassembled?) and small brush into case, if small soap bar is attached off-center/near top of Bottom-half.
Just don't make any sudden moves if some airport x-ray screener suddenly looks panicky/excited.

That's the (engineering) result of my "unhappy" experience...

And, considering the price, its an awesome value.

Here's the thing about brush shaving, its really nice.It feels good on your face, it results in a nice close shave, and its honestly kinda fun to do it the old school way.

The bad part is, you go on the internet and find out that there's a super elite group of people who will tell you that THIS brand of shave soap is the best soap and you should only use THIS brand of badger brush because the other types don't compare and how you can only use THIS kind of razor because the other kinds will somehow destroy your face and make shaving the kind of unspeakable horror only sick, twisted people dare entertain their minds with.

The point I'm trying to make is this:there is actually a community of shaving snobs.People who've actually invested over a hundred dollars in particular, elite equipment to SCRAPE LITTLE HAIRS OFF THEIR CHINS!!!!

So they see this cheapo set and turn their noses up at it, because its ONLY EIGHT DOLLARS and you can BUY IT AT WAL-MART!!!
I do like wet shaving.Its a good shave.I shave with a double edge safety razor (a Merkur) and this particular kit.And it works out GREAT!!!So here's my review:

THE BRUSH:Its a boars hair brush, and its fine.It lathers well, it works the way it should, its not rough on my face at all.Yes, it has a plastic handle.WHO CARES?!?!?!?!Its the HANDLE of a friggin BRUSH!!!Do your hands start on fire if they touch plastic?Do you get an allergic reaction if your fingertips handle a brush thats not metal or wood?If you answered "No" to both those questions, then you're fine.Complaining about the material of a shaving brush handle makes you a snob.

THE BOWL:Its a bowl.The soap sits in it, it holds steady when you lather.Its fine.You know why? Because its a FREAKIN' BOWL!!!How do you honestly complain about a bowl?It functions, it doesn't offend the eye, its fine.Don't be a snob.

THE SOAP:Honestly, I've tried so many canned shaving creams its ridiculous.I'm a man with sensitive skin and it doesn't matter how moisturizing the cream was, I still had nicks and cuts and irritated skin.So imagine my surprise to find this soap to be a key part of a very clean, enjoyable shave.I seriously get better results from this soap than I do with my gels and creams.Way to go, VDH shaving soap.Are there better shaving soaps?Probably.Do I care?No, because this one leaves my face moisturized and refreshed, costs 1.80 per bar, and I can actually get it without ordering it over the internet.
BOTTOM LINE:A great wet shave kit, especially for the price.Avoid the snobby opinions and give it an honest shot.If you're not a total tool you'll probably be surprised by how nice this kit is.

There are plenty of things in this world where the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail make a huge difference.Guitars are such a product.Automobiles are another.Shaving brushes and bowls are NOT!!!

Don't be a dumb shaving snob, just go shave your face, then start investing yourself in something thats actually important.

Kingsley Shave Soap Bowl with Lid Natural Wood Review

The good:

It's a nice, solid, pretty wood shaving bowl.

The bad: It's not nearly as pretty as shown in the picture- mine was a uniform chocolate brown, rather than the varnished natural wood you see here. Also, it's far too shallow to get any sort of decent foam going, but maybe that's just me. When I try using it, it just spills everywhere. Still, not bad for $5, right? Wrong! It reeked of lacquer when I got it, as if the shellac had not had time to dry before it was packed and shipped. I set it out to cure for a few more days, and after four days the horrid smell was finally (mostly) gone. Sadly, as soon as I put some soap in it and closed the lid, the smell came back. So unless you like shaving with soap that's been marinading in paint fumes, skip on this. It's several months old now, and still stinks up the medicine cabinet.

The ugly:

This is the second review I wrote for this. The first one was negative as well, and then I received an Amazon message asking me to take down my review in exchange for my money back. I told them I wasn't interested, so then I received a private email that Amazon couldn't read suggesting I would get my money back, my shipping back, and could still keep the silly bowl if I took my review down. I said I wasn't about to be bribed, asked them to stop contacting me, and yet somehow my review seems to have vanished!

Also, the shipping was over $6, so about sixty percent of the price of this thing was shipping.

Save your money and get something- anything!- else.

(More customer reviews)At first, this soap seems a little small for what you pay for it. Then you realize it's worth every penny. This is my go-to soap now, for both scent preference and performance. The sea buckthorn gives this a sort of woodsy-citrus scent that really is quite perfect. I bowl lather, and the scent is a bit more pronounced when lathering in the bowl than on the face - which is fine with me. I've used many, many soaps, and this stuff lathers quicker than almost every one I've used (with the main exception being Arko Shaving Soap Stick). The lather is slick and protective, and I can usually get away with two passes when shaving with this stuff as opposed to three with most other products. Furthermore, some soaps and creams are really finicky with the temperature or hardness of water you use to make the lather; this doesn't seem to be the case here.

If you buy this and regret it, let me know, because I'd be happy to take it off your hands!
